Newsroom Desk Editor (News, Sports, Arts & Entertainment, Multimedia)
Pay: Per Day Rate (5 days per week)
OVERVIEW
A desk editor is responsible for guiding The State News’ daily content. Daily tasks include guiding reporters through the reporting and writing process, editing and publishing stories and acting as a bridge between reporters and newsroom leadership. A great desk editor not only manages their reporters but serves them as well.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Ensures all reporters create content regularly and that student interests and concerns are being covered by reporters.
- Assigns stories to reporters, including timely and breaking news coverage.
- Works with reporters to set story deadlines and accountability measures. Keeps up with team members’ progress on assignments; intercedes if necessary.
- Edits and publishes articles on a daily basis.
- Sends stories to receive copy edits.
- Answers questions and helps copy editors contact reporters if needed.
- Works with reporters to brainstorm and consider potential visuals for each story.
- Ensures reporters are staying informed about their beat and provides them with suggestions and resources for doing so.
- Ensures breaking news is covered quickly and effectively and edits breaking news stories as needed, even if outside of business hours.
- Attends budget meetings with a clear understanding of what reporters are working on.
- Attends editorial board meetings and contributes ideas for editorials and their personal opinion on editorial topics.
- Understands what content is being produced at The State News and makes recommendations on where coverage could be strengthened or expanded upon.
- Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the managing editor.
- Keeps track of team’s pay on newsroom-wide document, preferably on a daily basis.
