Pay: Per-Assignment Rate (2 stories per week, 2 days in the newsroom)

QUALIFICATIONS 

• Enrolled as a full-time student at Michigan State University (12+ credit hours)

• Understands the type of news content apt to resonate with the Spartan community

• Strong writer, interviewer

• Able to meet deadlines

JOB DESCRIPTION

• Produces content related to issues and interests in a variety of MSU student groups. What are they advocating for? What resources are available to them? What issues are affecting them? This is a features beat

  • This includes groups like:

  • International students

  • Adult and parent students

  • Transfer students

  • Out-of-state students

  • First-generation students

  • Grad students

  • Interesting student organizations

• Focuses more on the features angles rather than hard news

• Looks in unique places for student-related stories, including social media, word of mouth, etc.

• Collaborates and communicates often with visual journalists on each story to help create the most engaging content.

• Works with editors and fellow reporters during breaking news to ensure it is covered and that someone reaches the scene as quickly as possible.

• Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.

• Creates stories that are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate.

• Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the managing editor
