QUALIFICATIONS 

• Enrolled as a full-time student at Michigan State University (12+ credit hours)

• Understand the type of news content apt to resonate with the Spartan community

• Knowledge of AP Style

• Able to meet deadlines

JOB DESCRIPTION

• Responsible for enhancing The State News’ content (both body copy and headlines) to be understandable and flow effectively.

• Maintains regular communication with supervisor and reporters to provide feedback for content creators and address questions as they arise.

• Edits articles for grammar and AP Style errors, but reads stories as a reader would to make sure the story makes sense as a whole.

• Improves and edits headlines.

• Be prepared to help edit quickly when breaking news occurs. Understands the importance of working outside business hours to respond to breaking news.

• Communicates with the copy chief when questions or concerns arise.

• Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.

• Ensures stories are informative, interesting, fair and accurate.

• Maintains regular newsroom office hours as assigned by the managing editor.
