The State News is seeking talented freelance journalists to join our permanent freelance team. This flexible opportunity is perfect for Michigan State University students who want to contribute to professional journalism without the commitment of full-time requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Enrolled as a full-time student at Michigan State University (12+ credit hours)
- Understand the type of news content apt to resonate with the Spartan community.
- All majors welcome - journalism background not required
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Ability to meet deadlines and work with editors
- Interest in contributing to campus and local journalism
Coverage Areas
We welcome freelance content across all our coverage areas:
- News - Breaking news, campus events, local stories
- Sports - Athletic events, player profiles, sports analysis
- Arts & Culture - Entertainment, cultural events, reviews
- Opinion - Commentary and editorial pieces
- Multimedia - Photography, video content
- Features - In-depth profiles, human interest stories
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Works with Freelance Editor to produce content related to the area of coverage
- Pitches and writes stories as approved.
- Story assignments are not limited to one specific beat and can often span across multiple coverage areas.
- Looks in unique places for story ideas, like social media, press conferences, etc.
- Collaborates and communicates often with Editor
- Maintains journalistic ethics and social media ethics.
- Creates stories that are informative, interesting, fair, and accurate.
